Wayne State University, under the guidance of
WSU public safety director Anthony Holt, is testing a new emergency communications system that would utilize text messaging and e-mail to reach students, faculty and staff.
Excerpts:
Holt said 15,000
people have signed up so far for the emergency notification system,
which sends detailed emergency messages as text messages to cell
phones, or to e-mail accounts, or to land line phones. Wayne State has
33,000 students and 2,000 staff, Holt said.
"One
of the main things I got out of the evaluation forms from the students
is that they want more information about what to do in a crisis," Holt
said, adding that students want to know, "Do we stay in the classroom?
Do we try to run? Do we try to barricade the classroom?"
